Happy Monday!

So...I have a question of the day - what do you all think of the 'outfit' Venus Williams wore in the French Open?

Some say that she's disgraceful for wearing flesh toned underpants to create the "illusion" of going commando. While the rules are different in France as far as what is appropriate clothing to wear while competing, some say she should be more respectful of the spectators and dress like a "professional" athlete rather than dressing a bit "risque." While most agree she is a celebrity, some feel she should save outfits like these for the red carpet rather than on the court.

Others, however, believe that as long as she is fully clothed (which she is), it shouldn't matter what she's wearing, and they feel that we should focus on her game rather than her clothes. Both Serena and Venus Williams are arguably the best female tennis players ever - and if they want to dress a certain way, whether it be for shock value or simply because it's their taste - we shouldn't care what they have on so long as they keep winning. If they're not breaking any rules, then tennis is all we should focus on.

So what do YOU think? Is Venus right for wearing what she feels comfortable in and is her personal taste, or is she risque for wearing something that gives the illusion of being bare bottomed? Or do you not care at all about what athletes wear while competing? Or the Williams sisters in general?

What say you?

Go!

Le first bitches!

We posted a similar thing at the Brew. Now, no one is looking at her game... they're all looking at her outfits. It's distracting for her as an athlete.

DARN YOU FURY!

Oh and I think the outfit is risque for tennis and a play for eyes (she got mine!). It's not a cute outfit and the skin colored panties are over the top...but I'm not mad.

Venus doesn't have the budunkadonk that Serena has so she's working what she got. LOL

Love the pic, Yolanda - yours on this blog, I'm talking about...

As far as Venus goes - let me just say, I remember the multitude of risque outfits Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova have worn. And, to be honest, I've seen more Fredericks Of Hollywood-esque outfits on lesser knowns in Europe tennis matches (I actually WATCH womens' tennis regardless of the Williams Sisters - I'm actually not a fan of them).

So I find it amusing that everyone is up in arms when the Williams Sister decide to wear anything sexy. To me, it's media-driven "shock" at the audacity of two star Black females to show off their ample assets - "how DARE these women show off their succulent, African-descended physiques!" Meanwhile, little Russian Petrova or whomever can wear the same ish a month from now, and no one will bat an eyelash.

Let me state again - I'm not even a fan of theirs. But I'm honest - and when Kournikova went through her sexy phase, where was the shock and dismay? It's not even hard to find pics of her half-naked - Google 'em! If your settings ain't too strict, you'll find plenty.

I already know what place this comes from - and people are jumping right on board, grilling Venus as being some type of scandalous player for wearing this. I'm not saying i think her and other should just Britney-out when playing, but I note the double-standard and chuckle.

It's so easy to sway the masses opinions, I think people in positions to do so probably sidebet each other to see what they can get the public to swing on next...

Similar to how "offensive" and "too sexy" Ciara's new video allegedly is...I heard a girl I know telling me that ish. I reminded her "um...one of Britney's videos off her last album had her BUCK-NAKED in the video. How come that ish wasn't too sexy or getting people to say it shouldn't be played?!?"

Exactly.

I agree with Rameer on the Russian tennis players. I think people are shocked because Venus actually has some skill. Kournikova leaned on her looks because on the court she was a loser...or still is. I don't know, if she's playing, I turn to see what shes wearing or if she has the wet white shirt thing going on..again.

If Britney could pop her ass like Ciara...they'd call it too much. Since she was basically just spastically moving around and covering up, ehh.

Ciara makes you wanna do the damn thang! ..and I don't even like Ciara

@ Fury - yeah, Venus & Serena are unquestionable, dominant stars. But so is Sharapova. In fact, she's been the #1 player in the world a few times, right?

Google Image her. She STILL takes super-sexy pics and wears head-turning outfits on the court from time to time.

And I agree with you on Ciara having more to pop than Britney - but that's my point. The Black and Latina physique upsets, intimidates, and flat-out TITILLATES many white people. So the white-owned, white-run media and opinion givers react harshly, and the masses jump on board without ever thinking "hey....wait a minute..."

Kim Kardashian is famous for sucking Ray J's dillz. Look at how she's treated in the mass media as compared to Janet Jackson. They treat her like she's a respectable, legit celebrity worthy of adulation and the most respectful of write-ups and commercials. Oh sure, you still gets joked on - but that chick was on THE FIELD during The Super Bowl this year.

Other players' WIVES couldn't pull that off. AND, she went to the White House with the Lakers - um, she ain't even the one MARRIED TO ONE OF THEM!!!

Meanwhile, Janet still gets a bit of a snicker on most news programs, and can NEVER have anything mentioned without them mentioning the Super Bowl incident that JUSTIN TIMBERFAKE CAUSED but isn't credited with. Seriously - I saw her doing press for the last Tyler Perry flick, and both her and Tyler had to tell people to STOP ASKING ABOUT IT and concentrate on THE MOVIE.

I'm telling you - I already KNOW what this is. Whether people see it or not...

Wow!!!! Risque is it! Yes she's a phenomenal athlete and even the outfit can't take that away from her. But it's too over the top in my personal opinion.

Red carpet is even questionable...

Personally, I don't see anything to get upset about. Do I think it's appealing or appropriate? No. But at the same time, like you all said, other players have worn the same or less and gotten no flack for it. I think the outfit is ugly, but that's not a sin...so I think they should leave her alone.

I've never understood the attraction to their bodies, but I'm not a man so I guess I don't have to understand it. They both look like men to me, and look "hard" rather than soft or feminine. Even in dresses, they look like they're in drag to me. I feel like I can only appreciate their bodies while they're actually PLAYING the sport, but it's not sexy to me. But hey, I'm not a man, and if men like it, then I love it. Who cares....

I agree with Stef and Serena, I think it's ugly and inappropriate. I feel like those sisters do this to shock people. To each her own, but it's not necessary in my opinion. Let your skills speak for themselves. Now, like Yolanda pointed out, everyone is talking about your outfit, not your ability to play tennis. While no one can take their skill away from them, why would they want to distract people from it? I don't get it. It's tasteless. I don't think you have to show alot to be sexy...if that's what they're going for.

And not for nothing, if I had taken my child to a tennis match and they saw that, I'd be mortified. No one (except men it seems) wants to see that. I agree with the double standard, but that still doesn't make it okay to me.

Rameer The Circumstance said...

@ Stef - I agree with you on the attractiveness thing. I'm like the only Black dude NOT attracted to either one. But to each his or her own...

Jay said...

Nothing much more for me to add to the debate...I echo what Fury and Rameer said about the double standard. While I don't find either of them to be sexy or feminine or remotely attractive, they can wear what they want. I really don't care. They do it for shock value so that people have something to talk about - not cuz that's what they're comfortable wearing. Let's call it what it is.

I don't think it's necessary for them to do, and they could walk out there butt naked and I'd still think they were both hideous. That aside, if other (white) playes can wear the same or worse and get away with it, then leave them alone. They're just mad that they beat the pants off those other women and can do it wearing next to nothing while the other ones NEED to wear something sexy just to get noticed.

Appropriate? No. Risque? Yes. Do I care? Not a rat's ass.

@Rameer,

No, you're not the only black man NOT attracted to them. I think they look like dudes. I don't see what Common sees in Serena. I guess I'm just not a fan of the muscle butt, horse legs, drag face looking women. But hey, to each his own.

Rameer The Circumstance said...

My bad, Hov. I hear, see and read dudes going gaga over these mannish women all the time - outside of my boys, it seems like I'm on an island in my thought that they're not attractive.

Glad to see it's not just me.

That's an UGLY outfit.. point blank. She shouldn't wear it on or off the court. Or even to clean the house. LOL The shit is UGLY!!! lol..
BUT that's what makes the world go round. Our differences & if she thought it was cute & comfy & this is what she wanted to wear that day WHO AM I TO JUDGE...
I could care less what she wears or does or any of it...LOL I do care about Serena dating my man Common....

Stef said...

Yeah, what does he see in her!? Her personality doesn't even seem all that nice! Remember when she threatened the judge? She seemed a bit mean and unlady-like. She looks like she'd eat him alive! LOL!

Yolanda said...

And Common wants to marry Serena (well, he's not opposed to it)... he was real open talking about her on Wendy's show the other week. She must be doing something right.

There is nothing wrong with the outfit...people need to get over themselves.

TO agree w/ RAmeer on the fact the when people of color( Black/Af. American, etc.) are gyratin all over the place, it's "They are LOOSE, RISQUE, lots of swooning & clicking of the tongue abt why this woman is wearing that & so forth" ..A LA 106th & PArk's summer show( I can't remember what it's called)--it's a show at a beach where they have concerts. VS, when MTV has the same show, SUmmer Jam? (the name exacpes me)where they have the performers come perform for the kids on the beach..it's just "good clean fun, kids dancing", etc.

I rememeber years ago, my best guy freind Dave commenting on this( Brooke...remember Dave?) , he was like MTV's show, cool..BET's version ..GOOD LAWD..I would NOT let my daughter go ther(as his eye bulged at the girls in bikinis" ..Double Standard FOR REAL!
