Happy Fantabulous Tuesday!

So this past Saturday, a girlfriend of mine, her fiance and I were sitting out on their deck enjoying the warm breeze watching the kiddies play. We were talking about my blog, pics of my Godson that her fiance sends me, general chit chat, etc. I tell her that sometimes I don't get a chance to look at the photos or jokes that they forward until the end of the day because work has me so busy. Out of nowhere she says, "If you didn't work so much, you'd have a man."

...uh...okay...???

I know she meant well, and I didn't take offense. I didn't really even think about what she said until I was driving back home to NY Sunday night thinking about my workload for the next day. I DO work long hours, mostly 10 hour days. But if I left work at 6 pm everyday, what would I really be doing? It's not like I'm turning down dates and beating the men off with a stick because I have a late meeting or phone calls to return at work. No men are sitting on my doorstep waiting for me to get home. If I wasn't at work, I'd be at the gym, on my couch watching tv or on my computer blogging or Facebooking. It's as simple as that.

I know my clock is ticking and that I'm not getting any younger. I'm no closer to finding Mr. Right than I was the first time I celebrated my 30th birthday, let alone the 6th anniversary of it :) I might as well snatch up stock in Energizer or Duracell at this point...that's right, I said it. Not ashamed of it either! I have plenty of guy friends who always ask why I'm single...even though they're single themselves and never asked me out. Or, if we DID date, they say I'm the one that got away...even though I never really went anywhere. I'm standing right here! Oh that's right, you're a moron.

I kid...kinda... :-)

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining or feeling sorry for myself. In fact, I don't think I worry about my "singlehood" as much as other people do. My friend's comment seemed to come out of left field since we weren't on the topic of relationships, and I surely wasn't complaining about my status. But what I find is that most people who care about me simply want me to be happy, and they think that if I had a man, I'd be happy...complete.

They tell me I'm a catch - a beautiful, intelligent woman that any man would be lucky to have. Well, guess what? I believe them! They run down my credentials like they're writing my cover letter: "you're single, attractive, intelligent, educated, a nice person, you can cook, you have all your teeth"...the list goes on. But here's the kicker. I'm not looking at my list of qualities everyday trying to be what I assume every man wants; I'm simply just being the woman that I am. I don't want to be someone's "checklist." Men don't belong on one either.

This is not all to say that I wouldn't welcome a genuine relationship. I think I thrive in relationships personally. But relationships are very hard work and they require both people to be complete, whole people in their own right. Until I feel like I'm completely there, I wouldn't be ready for Mr. Right even if he showed up with a ring professing his undying love for me. Hell, "Mr. Right Now" ain't even calling me back! LOL!!

If I met him right now, I wouldn't want to try to convince him of how great I am. That's a turn-off, and I hate when men try to convince me that they're some sort of commodity. I want to simply be that person. No two people who are meant to be together will have to convince each other of how great the other one is. They'll simply be two great people who've found each other. So until we discover each other, I'll re-discover myself.

Right now, I'm working on all the things that bring meaning to my life, things that I want people to remember me for. I'm going to assume that I will never meet Mr. Right, and that my life has to be about something of value outside of wanting a husband or children. I'm unencumbered by husband or child, so I have nothing but time to cross things off my to-do list of things that matter to me most. That list is made up of things I've always wanted to learn or try to do, places I want to visit. Now, the tough part is actually DOING them!

You know what's funny? If I'm trying to do all of the things on my to-do list, I won't have time for a man. How funny is that? Instead of me looking for one, he'd have to try to keep up with me. If I work my list, I'd have no time for him. I'd be putting him off, telling him I'm gonna call him back, making him wait :) And he'd keep pursuing me. Men are funny that way...they love the chase :)

Okay, maybe not ALL men, but you know what I mean. My point is, I'm not slowing down so I can find a man. I'm not leaving work early so I can go home and wait for my Prince Charming to knock on my door. That just ain't gonna happen. I'm gonna keep busy trying to find me. When you find you, it won't matter any more if there is a man that managed to keep up or not, one that managed to find you or not. Like my friend Denise always says, I have everything I need and all the love my heart and hand can hold. When I go discover myself, I'll love what I find along the way :-)

Brooke there are many women that I know that work 10 hour days and are tremendously busy and they still have a man. I think you are a wonderful & amazing person & beautiful woman. You don't have to convince anyone of anything. I think when you meet the right man & he takes the time to get to know you he will fall in love with you. It hasn't happened yet cause god has sent you a bunch of toads so you can appreciate the prince when you get him!! :)
People always want to judge or criticize and tell you how to live your life. HAD I listened to people I would be miserable right now & not on cloud 14 like I am.

"If you didn't work so much, you'd have a man..." Hmmmm...that sounds more appropriate about your boss.

puh-lease...i know your friend meant well, but yea, that is totally incorrect. Like u said, if were not working you'd be at gym, etc..ding your stuff you do..& you still do it, so not man yet...so what's one or two hours difference? lots of corporate workaholics have men...so that ideaology is crazy to me!

in any cae enjoy the day & make sure your work is complete b/c then you WONT have a job & no guy will talk to you b/.c you are unemployed!!!:-)

Annamaria said...

Hey there is nothing wrong with being unemployed...lol...IF you are almost 7 months pregnant!!!!!!!!! LMAO

Brooke said...

LMAO!! Tiswana, you crazy :)

Thank you Annamaria! You're so sweet. I sometimes think my attached friends have amnesia about their single days :)

But honestly, work isn't what's keeping me from having a man - the men I meet are keeping me from having a man :-) LOL!!

Malek said...

Just continue to do you....That statement was crazy because just as you said if you did leave early you would be doing the very things that you mentioned. The thing is that as you get older and more into the real world how you meet people is very different. If I had to go back out into the dating world I would be up a creek with out a paddle. I think how you meet people now is by how you said simply living your life. no one knows when Mr Right or Mr Right now will show up so that's right live your life and HE will catch up with YOU.....

Stay FAB U LOUS....

XOXOX

Annamaria said...

I don't have amnesia I just don't believe in sacrificing the things in your life or yourself for a relationship??
If you was a man that worked 10 hours a day NO ONE would tell you NOTHING... BUT because you a woman you are wrong?? GET OUTTA HERE....

Dammit.... I knew it was a mistake to read this dam blog. I gotta work, but I'm gonna get sucked into this joint and checking people's responses. See that's that bullshit.

Although I do not agree with your friend at all about working to much... there is something to be said for her statement. It's funny how sometimes people take a relaxed attitude with dating. Not that there is not truth to the statement, but I think when people say God is gonna bring my person to me, they have to be careful. I compare that with finding a job... sure God can find the right job for me..or Lead me to the right job. Will I find the right job if I don't open up the paper, go on monster, network with the right people, fill out the application?

I say all that to say, if you want to be in a relationship, don't be afraid to go out and get one. I am 100% absolutely sure one of the priorities in my life is to get married and have kids. This is not to say that I'm going to settle just to get married and their is absolutely a chance that it won't happen, but I am going to everything in my power..and use my GOd given talents to make that happen. But that's just my priority.

momo925 said...

I agree with Annamaria! people are quick to tell you what you are doing wrong and how you could do it better. The bottom line is...what's meant to be will be. Some people are quick to jump into a relationship because they can't stand being alone. We all want someone to be happy with and share our lives with, but I don't think that people should look at being single as if it's the plague lol. Single doesn't always = unhappy just like being in a relationship doesn't always mean that you've found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There are plenty of women who can say they have a man, but their man is liar and a cheater. Does that make them better off because they have a man and I'm single?
Now don't get me wrong...I'm not hating on anyone that is happy, in a loving healthy relationship and has found mr. right or even mr. right now. There are plenty of success stories. I wish you well and more power to you :-) I'm just saying that being single doesn't mean you shouldn't work as hard in your profession or that you should drop everything to go find a man. When the right one comes along you will know.

Hey Brooke,

In reading today's entry you mentioned about being a "complete and whole person." I think we put too much pressure on ourselves and fail to realize that as the years roll by, we are evolving into this "complete person." It's not like we wake up and BAM, I'm complete and whole now, time to let love in!!! I find it's when you are not looking that's when it happens. Moreover, what is wrong with working hard? Nothing damnit!! We only go around once, so get yours and whoever wants to rock with you, will either get on board or get left, period!!!

momo925 said...

Brooke why did you break Rameer's heart??!! WHY OH WHY?!!LMAO

Brooke said...

I didn't break Rameer's heart, he's using this webcam thing to flip the real issue - HE DON'T WANT ME MAN!! LOL!!

Pretty Ricky - don't get me wrong. I don't have a lax attitude when it comes to meeting people - men in particular. Don't count me out as a spinster with 70 cats. I meet men all the time. The thing is I just don't meet the right ones. Or they somehow fall into the friend category.

But I go out, you'll catch me a function, a concert, busy wit friends...hell, I'm going to DR with your ass all by myself! So making myself available or open to a relationship isn't the issue. It's just that until that person comes, IF THEY DO, then I'll keep busy doing what makes me happy.

I'm one of those people who actually loves my job..and spending time with my friends, and going to spend time with my family. People always say that if I didn't spend time with my family or running my behind to Philly every weekend, or that if I wasn't always working, I'd be married by now. But that's not true. I'd be at home by myself missing my nephew's first steps, or playing with them in the playground, or reading to them...that's what I'd be missing. The right man isn't going to keep me from working hard or doing the things I love...he's going to jump on board while having his own life. Like Ms. Malcom said, he'll rock WITH me!

Pretty Ricky What Dey Call'em said...

I just hope people who "envision" being in a relationship and claim thats something they want... resign to the attitude that he/she'll find me. Just know, it's probably not at work or by the TV, or even though facebook (Even though Brooke I think you and Rameer be BlogF**ckin all the time according to Craig.)

And I am not even saying settle for a person (a liar or cheater) and I'm not even saying go to the club...but most likely your person is not already in your house.

Pretty Ricky What Dey Call'em said...

@Brooke - That comment was not really meant for you specifically I know you go out and shake your a$$... it was more towards the general sentiment of sitting back and waiting for God to do something. And meeting duds is part of the dating game! So I think your issue is just that you don't meet the right jokers.

I always viewed dating as one of those old settlers going to the west back in the day to find goal. They'd use their little scooper...dig up a bunch of rocks..shake that shit hoping a nugget would be left. Sometimes they just ended up with nothing... sometimes they ended with what looked like gold, but was that fake shyt, but every once in a while... jackpot. but it all started with taking that scooper and digging.

Brooke said...

I totally get that. And I put myself out there. While I'm disengaged from the club scene, I've done online dating, I go to different functions, and I'm certainly not at home every night eating bon bons. Like I said it the blog, I don't expect my Prince Charming to knock on my door, so why be home waiting? I don't think he's at my house...so working late isn't keeping him from coming over :)

Brooke,

You know that I think you are a catch. You are dealing with ametuers who do not know who to approach you. We all work hard because we need to in order to ensure our own survival.

I am quite sure that you will find Mr. Right. Of course, Mr. RightNow might be good too!

Let me not say too much about locks, but I am pretty good at cracking codes like Contra on NES back in the day. I am sure that I could crack yours.

A,B,A,B,Left,Right,Left,Right,Up,Down,Up,Down,Select,Start!

Unless you have a time lock. Then I have the combinaton...with a key.

I can also do a facial recognition! :)

Finger Recognition too...

It all comes down to what you really want in your heart! So many are so busy being busy, they don't know how to quiet their soul and listen! Life is a rat race as constructed by society. Trust, once in balance with yourself and your other, that joint becomes a splendid ass journey! Know that the journey isn't always going to be a bed of roses! The minute one person stops growing or drifts twisted from the dance . . .the balance and journey is over --for that pair! Keep the mind, body and soul growing, the rest will take care of itself!

Brooke said...

Annamaria, don't be fooled. All this flirting on the blog is simply that...flirting :) The men I meet have no problem approaching me, flirting with me or having sex with me. But that's not what I want (thus my stock in Duracell) LOL!. While it's all fun, I recognize it for what it is. It can be flattering, but can't be take seriously. I just haven't found the man that's on my same page yet...no worries. If it's meant to be it'll be.

I agree Sneferu...I will draw what's in my heart to me. I have balance and joy in my life now. I count my blessings everyday.

What's with all this "lock" shyt? I think Brooke is worth WAY more than that. I'm not surprised she's still single - it's cuz dudes aren't good enough for her. If that's what you're coming at her with, no wonder she's still single!

Cracking codes in Spanish? That's what's up! lol.

Brooke we've had this convo a few times as I had that blog talking about Hooking Up. Some people really forget how it was when they were single and some really act like they can't live without a partner even if he is just Mr. Right Now.

As it was stated by Sneferu, follow your heart sis. You're doing big things in your life and the most important part is you're happy. There are a lot of unhappy people out there that have time to give love advice, tell you what you need to do yet their relationship is all jacked up! Misery loves and adores company!

I'm with you, the clock is ticking for me but I can look at life and say I'm so damn happy! So much is going on for me and Mr. Right will either jump on the bus or I'll tell him don't even bother getting on cause the last thing I need is someone to try and stop the show and be a dream thief.

Anyway sometimes when you're not looking it begins to happen and before you know it you're are locked ;-) I believe in God providing the right person for you, but like Pretty Ricky said you have to put something into it like leaving the house lol. Which I know you have no problem with as you stated; but there are honestly people wondering why they don't meet anyone and all they do is stay in the house, they don't intermingle, network, nothing.

Have fun in DR sista. Those are the best trips when you go solo and meet up with peeps!

The Cable Guy said...

Why I gotta be corny? Do you know me? Let me ask you this since you know Brooke so well. If she loves Latinos so much, how come she ain't wit you? Hmmm?

Ok...let me try this again...

Brooke, I totally know where you are coming from. I was single for a VERY VERY long time. I had many tell me...that I was too focused on my career, I was unapproachable, headstrong, and that intimidated men...etc.

I know that I had tried the club, and other places where there might be available men...but I didn't really find anything that was fulfilling. I even did the online dating that had some good results and bad results...but mostly yielded friends...there wasn't a lot of chemistry. So I decided to just put the dating thing on hold...and just focus on me. Just Tanya...and that yielded be being alone for a while. I thought I was going to be single for ever...but I figured I needed to be whole for someone to be truly attracted to me. If I was not whole...I would attract a man that was not whole as well. So I continued to work on me...as I knew a man would not be able to complete me. I needed to be complete to attract that man that I really wanted.

So one day...I was home sick...and what did I do...I went on black planet...which I hardly went on...and I had a message...from a man who asked me to detail what made me...me...and I answered...and I didn't think much of it...but I guess he liked my answer and we continued to talk...and guess what...it has been almost 18 months since that initial email exchange. I am truly happy and know that things will be great between us...but I needed to be complete before I got to that point. I was not expecting anything but willing to explore the possibilities...and it has been phenomenal.

I continue to work on myself...as he continues to work on himself. We are works in progress.

So...continue to work on you...and keep your heart and mind open...and don't let people make you feel any kind of way because you are an independent and fabulous woman...who happens to be single.

The duracells will always need to be handy...

1. All joking aside - anyone who knows me knows I NEVER get jealous over anything. Jealous men are BITCHASSES...men should never be jealous of other men. It's a female trait...

2. I might beef occasionally, but usually it's either to make a serious point, or, in most cases, it's all jokes. But never e-thuggin' - you never see me threatening to "body" anyone. I don't DO that. People who know me personally know my pedigree, and I never feel the need to "convince" anyone of how hard I am. I never have, nor never will be confused with a thug. I just does what I do. Period.

3. Yes, I check Brooke's blog daily. I like it, and like her. I also check Yahoo, Facebook, Sohh.com. MTV.com, Reuters, AP News, USA Today, ESPN.com and Yahoo Sports. I check my boy Troy's blog as well.

4. I don't take anything that serious. People who truly know will tell you I have a simple philosophy - you can't whoop my ass, so it doesn't mean much. Now, we can debate all day how f'd up or liberating such a philosophy is, as my boys have, but essentially it keeps me at peace of mind, cuz the only thing I care about is if you can do me or my loved ones physical harm. Since the answer is NO 99.9% of the time, I never truly get upset or worried about much. My boys think it's crazy, but admit it works for me.

5. Annamaria is OFF LIMITS to piss off except for people whose name she knows. As such, I am cuing up another song for "Anonymous"...

***cues up Beck's "Loser", returns to regularly scheduled silliness***

And that they say pregnancy softens a woman. HA YEAH RIGHT

Annamaria said...

We do all get along... THOSE OF US WHO DON'T HAVE TO HIDE OUR IDENTITIES...LMAO

Brooke said...

Haven't had this many comments in awhile...always when there's beef! LOL!

It's all jokes in here, and not all anonymous' are the same. I know why "the lock" anonymous is anonymous, whereas there are others who just come in to start trouble. Today's anonymous is harmless :) And if y'all knew what I know about today's "anonymous", I'd be anonymous too! LOL!!

Who would'a thunk sweet, little pregnant Annamaria would be jackin fools up in here? Walking around 7 months pregnant with a taser!

Anonymous said...

was that a right hook?

Anonymous said...

What do you know about me Brooke? ;-)

Annamaria said...

Don't sleep I intend to be tasing fools while I am in Labor & delivery!!!! LMAO

Brooke said...

Anonymous said...

No you didn't go there!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm trying to help her get to 100.

Brooke said...

yes, I did go there!

Don't get f*cked up tryna tell all your business on the blog - she'll be waiting at home for you with Annamaria's taser!

Yeah, and of these 90 something comments, only like 4 have to do with the topic! LOL!!

When I have close to 100 comments, it's usually all pure buffoonery!

Latinegro said...

Back on Topic though...I think you should heed Tayna's advice...
