Girl Love

Happy Monday! I can't believe it's June already. This year is flying by!

Now if it would just get HOT outside I'd be all good! :-)

I'm tired today y'all. I got in from Philly late last night and was asleep before my head hit the pillow. I woke this morning wishing for at least one more hour. I was hoping there was someone I could reach out to to guest blog for me today (Craig has been MIA) because my brain wasn't functioning...still kinda isn't. I didn't have one thought about what I could blog about today...

...until...

I get on the train.

I turn on my iPod and close my eyes so that I can rest...and get "Blame it on the Alcohol" out of my head. They always seem to play that song on the radio right before I leave the house.

Anyway, I'm sitting there...and you know how you can just "feel" someone looking at you? I open my eyes and look up. A woman is standing right in front of me staring me in my face. She's probably in her late 20's, with somewhat Latin features and bright eyes. Pretty girl. She's probably about my height, although I couldn't really tell because I was sitting down and she was standing up. She was dressed in "work clothes" - slacks, denim jacket, sandals. She kinda looked like...me....only with more fair skin.

I turn away from her glance - figured she just zoned out and I caught her looking. But when I turned back, she was still in my grill. Not really sure what to do, I grinned at her.

She says something...her lips are moving. She's talking to me.

"Excuse me?" I say since I had my music on. I turn down the volume but I don't take the earbuds out. I'm thinking to myself, "maybe I have something in my nose." :)

"Your nose is peeling," she says.

I tell her I know, that I got sunburned on my nose while I was on vacation. She asks where I went and I tell her. She proceeds to tell me that she's half Dominican and half Black.

That's nice.

So now she wants to strike up a conversation and I suddenly wished I had kept my eyes closed.

She tells me how nice my skin looks, asked me if I was a Latina, asked if I had fun, etc. I answer all her questions and thank her for the compliment.

"Beautiful smile you have," she says.

"Thanks."

"Do you have a boyfriend?"

...huh?

"Uh...no."

"Shame."

...okay...this is weird.

The seat next to me opens up and she sits down. We suddenly have the attention of two guys standing to the side of me. Great.

"Would you like to hang out with me sometime?" she asks.

I have no idea what to say. I pretend like I don't hear her and the two guys are eyeballing me something fierce. I feel my face getting hot.

I guess she senses my uneasiness.

"I'm not a lesbian," she says laughing. The 2 guys look disappointed.

Up until that moment, I hadn’t assumed that she was, but I’m still not sure what I’m supposed to say at this point. I thought she might be embarrassed in retrospect by her bluntness and decided to try to defuse it with laughter.

"Neither am I," I say with a smile.

She then asks me, "do I look like one?"

What the hell? I guess I could have said that she didn't look like one - but is that a compliment? What do lesbians look like? I could have said "no, you don't look like a bull dyke"...but that's not right...right?

I just tell her that any woman could be a lesbian, that they don't have a "look." Although now I'm beginning to wonder if I have a "look" since I seem to get hit on by women more than any other woman I know.

My stop comes and I get up.

"So this is you..?" she says as I gather my bag.

"Yep!"

"So, can I get your number?"

"Thanks, but no thanks. You have a great Monday though."

She smiles and waves to me as I get off. The two guys smile and wave too, and they laugh and joke to themselves - something about "that is the best way to start off a Monday morning." They got jokes.

Oddly enough, I don't really feel totally weirded out by the whole thing. I think I was actually a bit flattered, even though she said she wasn't a lesbian. Whatever she was, she wasn't embarrassed, I wasn't embarrassed for her, and I'm not really sure I should have been. There are worse ways to get shut down, and I've been approached by WAY worse.

I'm a block away from work and a guy who works at the florist across the street yells out to me, "hey brown sugar, looking good!"

I smile and yell back "thank you!" I got compliments from a girl AND a guy this morning...and I'm smiling :) Guess that means I got it :) What a way to start off a Monday morning indeed :-)

Annamaria I'm so sorry. A loss like that affects you too as he was probably like a daddy to you. My condolences and keep busy girl, when you get sad think of your little bambino on the way.

Hey Brooke my grandmother always told me this, "Worry when they don't look anymore...then you know you need to step it up."

Her best line...and she told this to a jealous ex-boyfriend of mine too who was tripping that dudes were trying to kick game to me lol!!!!

You probably have a look of relaxation written across your face too.

I would have been weirded out too, she said she wasn't lesbian...but was she bi lol!!!!! It's all good. Compliments are deserved. As Nana would say, "You are doing something right!"

That is hysterical!I am sure she wasnt lesbian, but I think your case she would have tried it...lol

Annamaria, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's father's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Take care of yourself today - we'll miss you :(

Serena, I have more than a look of relaxation on my face...cuz girls hit on my all the time. Have no idea why, but hey...whatever. I'm not mad :)

Ant, I think she WAS a lesbian, or Bi like Serena said...I think it just occurred to her after the fact that I'm strictly dickly and she tried to play it off :) LOL!

LMAO that is crazy! I would have been very weirded out.

Brooke is a hot mama! Can I be like you when I grow up?! I following you lead...when's the next trip to DR? lol

B, I don't know why you're surprised, with your fine ass!

If you were a lesbian, would she be your type? :)

You and these "latinos" :)

Brooke said...

I'm not sure how to answer that. I'm not a lesbian so I don't have a type when it comes to women. I barely have a type when it comes to men.

I guess I'll say this. She was attractive, and she was polite. If she were a man, I might have given him my number - how's that? :)

Tell Pretty Ricky I'm so there next year! Annamaria may have to strap lil mama to her back and we all go lmao!

Ant...Rameer...whole Brookey's Cafe Blog needs to go! Could you imagine! You could have the Brookey Blog Cafe Suite in DR ;-)

Brooke said...

Serena! Now you're talking!

Ant, Rameer, CRAIG???? in DR???

would be ig'nant off da hook!

Craig would have us stopped at customs tho with all his "green peace" activity going on :)

Fury would be causing all kinds of trouble...

I don't even wanna know what Rameer would be doing :)

Pretty Ricky...I think I've got the whole blog coming with us next year!

Got caught up in the girl love and zoned out for a minute..but I'm back. Anyway brooke, it would be great to have the whole blog in the DR. I know the conversation would be off the hook. We should set aside a time to all get in our white robes and have real grown folks conversation. (I guess the white robes wouldn't be necessary, but the freaky side of me was imagining the possibilities!!!)

I am actually very excited about next year. All the promoters have been talking since we got back. NEXT YEAR IS GONNA BE FANTASTIC. (Deposits in early people... this year we may literally sell out!)

Latinegro said...

Well, I am going to already be there. I have a wedding to go to. When "these Latinos" get married we like to it on island of some type.

Brooke said...

awww shucks! Ant is going to be there already! Destination weddings are always so nice :)

Been running around all day, and gotta get a project done so I can go see Coldplay tonight...but I wanted to comment at least once...

1. I hate the term "fair skin". It has a bad connotation to it...with a historical implication of "fair" meaning "pure". It simply never use it and detest it...I say light-skinned. But I digress.

2. That girl was bi! Boy - you get an AWFUL LOT of attention. Ms. Brookes! With you sexy a$$...why you ain't do the modern thing and give her your e-mail? Lolz!

3. The Dominican Republic sounds great! As for what I would be doing...if I were to go, you'd know FIRST, Ms. Brookes! Lolz!

Gotta go - Viva La Vida in a few hours!!!

Brooke said...

well excuse me Rameer. When I think of fair skin, I think "burns easily." :) And that's what she looked like to me...sue me :)

Don't need some bi chick emailing me...tryna turn me out...that's okay, I'm good :)

I'd know first huh? Bow chicka wow wow! :) LOL!

The Cable Guy said...

Do they do doubles in DR? Can I room with you? :)

Serena W. said...

Pretty Ricky! When are deposits usually due so a sista can put it in the budget ;-) I'm talking to a couple of my peeps from NYC to see if they want to go too!

Ant you're going to be there! Ah shucks!

Brooke...you better watch out for Rameer...hmmmmm hmmmmmm!

Grown folks convo WITH white robes sounds hot lol!

Brooke said...

Serena, you should have seen the folks parading around in robes, it was nuts!

I already can't wait til next year!

Pretty Ricky What Dey Call'em said...

Serena...packages should be out on July 1. best thing to do is get the deposit down as early as possible. we are flexible with the additional payments. Anyway...enough about the DR... back to my girl on girl dreams.

Hey Brooke, I know it's been a little while. Anyway...

Usually I read everyone's responses before I post, but this time, I'm just responding.

Go Girl!!!

Okay, now that we got that out of the way, I must say, I started reading this one with one eye closed. Didn't know how this one was gonna turn out. But eventually I relaxed and found myself giggling and smiling. That was cool the way you shared it and I think you handled it best. You trusted your senses and didn't lead anyone on to believing that was you. And if it was you, I'm sure you would have responded accordingly. Being true to yourself is always on point.

To top it off, you got two admirers in one morning. Like you said, nice way to start the day. My hat is tipping... ;-)

Brooke said...

Kels, I was contemplating writing this blog...cuz you know...that's how rumors get started :-)

These things are too interesting NOT to share. Just really funny if you ask me...no harm in it :)

I was just trying not to encourage anymore girl on girl fantasies...

Pretty Ricky, I'm talking to you!

Glad your back Kels!

LOL - funny story. I think it is a great compliment that many people find you attractive although I think I would have been freaked out too. I think you were very polite in the way you treated her invitation and I think it's so funny b/c I have to say believe it or not I don't think I've ever been hit on by a woman before. I would totally expect more women to hit on me...I also agree with Serena's grandma, when they stop hitting on you is when you know something's wrong. lol...that's usually when I dramatically change my look. I think it's time to dramatically change my look...lol. Good blog today. Get some rest tonight girl.

Serena W. said...

Oooooh I can't wait till Siesta!!!! Hey Kels!!!! Yeah when I first started reading it too I said, "Uh oh." But yes Brooke you gently let ole girl down (hee hee).

DMoe said...

Greetings all....I'm new to the blog, and "girl love' was a great start....Read like a trashy novel for about two paragraphs, and then, alas....Reality set in.

I guess a compliment is a compliment, no matter the source.

Say thank you and keep rollin...

Brooke said...

DMoe! Welcome :-)
